Seva Prabodhini, Pune, a charitable trust registered with the charity commissioner and Modern Past Association (MPA), one of the oldest basketball clubs in Pune, have joined hands to promote basketball in the full glory of all its sporting aspects.
Organising various tournaments and creating awareness of the thrills involved in the game of basketball has been the main direction of effort that these organisations have decided to embrace. A beginning has been made and the joint efforts of these two organisations are surely and steadily yielding tangible results. The platform for young, budding players has been set to practice, hone and showcase their talent in the basketball arena. Physical fitness, team spirit, concentration and channelizing mental energies are all the benefits that have and will arise through this wonderful sport.
Pune has always been a hub of sports talent and basketball is being actively encouraged by the efforts of Seva Prabodhini and MPA. Taking a cue from the various sports that are organizing Sports Leagues, basketball is also being promoted effectively through a new League, aptly named the Pune Basketball League (PBL). Players from all strata of the society are participating in this League and its popularity is on the rise.
PBL is a platform where up and coming players are identified and given an opportunity to hone their basketball skills by competing against other talent. Being a League which co-exists with the District, State and National Level Tournaments, the opportunities for budding players are plenty and fair. PBL is a unique effort to promote young and talented basketball players.
PBL is conducted by selecting players for participating as teams in the playoffs from among hundreds of players. Main categorisation of the League takes place as ‘Boy’s Teams’ and ‘Girls’ Teams’. Multiple teams are formed with 10 players each and a talented coach is assigned to each team. These coaches are brought together under one roof from among all district level coaches.
The League provides all players with opportunities to build mental and physical fitness to be competitive while being team players and practicing a sportsman spirit. This in turn raises the standard of the game itself right at the root level. Besides, the players get an opportunity to play under talented coaches who ensure full utilisation of their potential.
The PBL 2012:
The PBL 2012 will be held at the Modern English Medium High School Basketball Court from 8th to 11th March 2012.
Selection for the League was held in February 2012 in the form of an Under-13 ‘Chintan Group Basketball Tournament’. Around 600 players participated in this tournament for which coaches from PDBA were appointed as selectors for selecting 60 players to form the Boys’ and Girls’ Groups, each Group further having 6 teams of 10 players each.
For the PBL 2012, participating players will be paid a remuneration and gifted with basketball kits, certificates, mementos, and kit bags. The coaches too will be paid coaching fees, which is a ‘first’ for basketball leagues, as well as provided with track-suits and mementos.
The League has some solid backing in terms of corporate & individual sponsors and is also heartily supported by media partners.
